Matt and I are trying something new.
We are reading the same book—at the same time.
We actually don’t share as many books as you might guess given as much as we both love to read. We have different tastes. The books I love, Matt’s usually lukewarm on. (like Running with Scissors, The Glass Castle…) The books I’m lukewarm on, Matt really likes. (Commonwealth comes to mind.)
And, we have a bad habit of just telling the other person about the book we’re reading, so there’s little need to read the book once the first person has read it and relayed all the good stuff.
But, I finished a (mediocre) book the other night (A $500 House in Detroit) when we were out in the hot tub. That was the only book I carried outside, but because Matt always reads at least two books at a time, he had an extra one sitting on the edge of the pool.
So, now we’re both reading The Poisonwood Bible.
Matt’s way ahead of me, but we’re both liking it so far. The language is a little more flowery than it needs to be, but you stop noticing it so much the further you get into each chapter…
Admittedly, when I picked up the book, I kind of thought we might treat our reading like a little book club. Like maybe we would sit in the living room with the TV turned off and discuss the story and the author’s choice to tell the story from several vantage points… Ha!
So far, Matt has asked me a few times if I like the book, and each time I’ve replied, “Yep.” Very deep discussions in deed!
The Poisonwood Bible is on my list of books to read! Can I join your club!? 🙂
