I’m about to start a drastic edit of my current writing project – and that means it’s time to rearrange some furniture.
There’s just something about a new room configuration that inspires me and makes me feel more motivated.
Whenever I had to write a research paper in high school, I would set up my parent’s card table in the corner of my room. I liked having the extra space to lay out all my research materials and color-coded note cards. In college, Matt and I would rearrange our apartment before finals week so we had a fresh environment in which to study.
So, this morning I scooted my real desk forward a few inches and drug my trusty Ikea table in from the garage. My office is less pretty with the addition of the plastic veneer furniture, but now I have more surface area on which to spread out all my notes.
I bought the thing to use as a kitchen table the FIRST time I moved to Florida (almost 12 years ago), and I just can’t part with it. When I moved back to Illinois in 2005, only so many things fit into my Ford Focus, but I made sure that table was one of them. In our next two houses, it served as my inside-the-closet writing desk. And, then, I moved it right back to Florida.
Here’s a picture of my new (and improved?) home office.
The only real drawback is that I practically have to be a contortionist to get to my cute metal drawers (also from Ikea, but deemed nice enough to be a full-time accessory in my room). Always the optimist though – Ha! – I’ve decided to look at any necessary drawer-diving as a healthy yoga break.
Love the idea of a fresh start to aim for a fresh perspective. What time can you come over to move my office around?
